Nothing To Laugh About (Thank You Rob Rogers)

Nothing to Laugh About

(Thank You Rob Rogers For All The Laughs)

I’ve been a long time subscriber to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. I even worked for them when I was in high school in the circulation department. My job was to try to get people to renew canceled subscriptions.

This was in the time before computers and print outs and I would have a stack of handwritten notices with phone numbers to call. There was one I received that was for a Mrs. Wright. She answered the phone and I said,

“Mrs. Wright…”

She said,

“Weight”

So I waited. I thought I could hear her breathing so again I said,

“Weight.”

So, I waited some more. I could still hear her breathing so I thought she was screwing with me. The third time I said,

“Mrs. Wright…”

“No, its Weight, my last name is Weight.”

Apparently the e looked like an r on the hand written notice. Plus, I had never heard of the last name Weight before. So, I made a mistake.

Not today though. Today my long time subscription will end. It turns out the Post-Gazette editors have decided what I should read and how I should be influenced. Today they fired longtime Political Cartoonist Rob Rogers for putting out anti-trump cartoons.

Isn’t that the point of Political Cartoons, to post a point of view? These were posted on the editorial page, where people are allowed to voice their opinions. Not anymore I guess. The Post-Gazette editors don’t want anything negative about a man that just said how talented the murderous dictator of North Korea is.

So, this is where we are now. Trump distances himself from our longtime allies like Canada and praises dictators. The man who campaigned on bringing back jobs to the United States, saves 6,000 jobs at ZTE in China, a phone company.

The company had a seven year ban placed upon it for security risks including making illegal sales to Iran and North Korea…Anybody, seeing a trend?

The day after Trump saved the company, his daughter Ivanka was given 13 patents to start manufacturing her goods in China. Now I may be naïve and one of the Trump supporters can explain this to me…but wasn’t one of the snake oil pitchman’s promises to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States?

Anyway, back to Rob Rogers. Couldn’t the PG have posted his cartoons alongside the unfunny right wing ones they are putting out now? Isn’t that what this country is supposed to be about, the right to voice your opinion?

I don’t have to agree with you. You don’t have to agree with me. I have a lot of friends that differ on my political views, but we are all still friends. That’s what makes this country great.

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend it to the death for your right to say it.”

Just don’t try to influence what I think. I’m smarter than that. Farewell and adieu Post-Gazette. Thank you Rob Rogers for all the laughs through the years.
